Afunti
(Restaurants - Kashgari)
2A Houguaibang Hutong
Beijing
6527 2288
Description:
Afunti is Beijing's largest and best-known Uighur restaurant. The Halal Muslim cuisine from China's far-flung Xinjiang Province includes skewers of seasoned roasted lamb accompanied by Xinjiang salad and tasty nan bread. Arrive early to enjoy the feast before the Xinjiang musicians and dancers (including an Arabian snake dancer and bellydancer) jump out to perform at 8pm. The show is invariably followed by audience participation, which can often be better described as drunken revelry atop the tables. A fun night out, popular with tour groups.

Xinjiang Red Rose
(Restaurants - Kashgari)
5 Xingfuyicun Ln
Beijing
6415 5741
Description:
Like the Afunti, this is a raucous Uighur restaurant with good food and excellent musical entertainment. Meals are slightly pricy, perhaps to include the live performances which are free. Evenings begin early with large portions of roast goat and lamb kebabs. However, the action really starts when the plates are taken away and the belly-dancers arrive. Expect a lively night of dancing and singing thereafter. Good night out for groups.

Xiyu Shifu
(Restaurants - Kashgari)
8 Huayuan East St
Beijing
6486 2555
Description:
Located directly across from Olympic Park, this Uighur restaurant is quite far out of town, but is authentic and worth the journey. Offers traditional Xinjiang cuisine as would be served in Kashgar. The roast sheep leg is the pick of the mutton dishes, but also try "da pan ji" (chicken and potato in spices). Food is spicy, so speak up if you want some chilis taken out. This is solid Uighur cuisine without all the razzmatazz.
